![]() ![]() Extremely flaky crust and nice, tart filling. Will most certainly make over and over again.Īmazing! I was skeptical about this unusual process but it turned out beautifully. A very rustic yet beautiful presentation. The crust was the best I have ever used and will be my go-to from now on. While I struggled with the crust (seemed too moist), the results were fantastic. Followed the directions, except used only peaches. My hubby was craving a peach cobbler, but I decided to try something different. (Could reduce that on the stove, with other flavor if desired, then “glaze” the peaches with it toward the end of baking.) Bake on rack low in oven. Filling was too juicy and leaked out I should not have added the liquid from the bowl of sliced peaches. (Very dry climate at the moment I’d start with less if it was a rainy winter day.). I thought 4 Tb ice water was going to be too much, but it was just right. Crust technique is easy and very good (albeit messy) will use again for other galettes. Mind the salt in the filling-recipe calls for 1 tsp kosher I used1/4 tsp Diamond Crystal kosher and any more would have been too salty. Made with all peaches, and the grated ginger. Either way, 5 stars for the crust alone!ĭelicious. I also lost almost all of the juice from inside my galette and felt as though it could have used a bit more sugar (maybe due to peaches not being very sweet or the loss of juices). I will continue to use this technique but will decrease the water next time, as my crust was a bit too moist. It’s been said before but it bears repeating - this crust technique led to the best and flakiest crust I have ever made! I always struggle with pie dough but this was my best ever. Not everyone went to culinary school and has a desire to spend extra time working on their pastry making techniques. Just please stop trying to make things fancy and French and extra. Every galette dough I’ve made has been in the food processor and has come out so flakey and crisp and tender and has held up to the juices from the fruit, so this technique is so completely over the top unnecessary and implying that this only this method is superior is such nonsense. By the time I incorporated the all of the water I had to keep adding flour to even be able to work with it. First of all 4 tbsps of water made the dough consistency like toothpaste. I’ve made tons of galettes before and am a pretty experienced baker and none have come out this bad. This is the most unnecessarily fussy pastry recipe I’ve ever attempted. I'm so loyal to this recipe that it almost hurts my heart that others are leaving negative reviews! The lime-y sweet tart filling is also perfection. I've made scores of pies since, but while this technique is messier than my usual pie crust, it also makes for an incredible result. It was insanely delicious the first time I made it as a pastry novice. This was the first galette I ever made, and I've made many since but often come back to use this recipe. Serve galette with whipped cream or ice cream if desired. Bake, rotating halfway through, until crust is deep golden brown everywhere, fruit is softened, and juices are bubbling, 45–50 minutes. Place galette in oven and immediately reduce heat to 375°. Pour cream into a small bowl and brush all over dough. Fold edges of dough up and over fruit, pleating as needed and being careful that folded edge of dough doesn’t tear (if it does, patch with dough scraps and pinch to seal). ![]() Step 12Īrrange fruit mixture in the center of chilled dough (still on parchment on baking sheet) and spread out evenly, leaving a 3" border. Add lime juice, vanilla, and ginger (if using) toss gently. Toss with your hands to combine, then add fruit and toss to coat. Combine cornstarch, lime zest, salt, and ⅓ cup sugar in a medium bowl. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before rolling out. Keep chilled, or transfer to a resealable plastic bag and freeze up to 3 months. Step 10ĭo Ahead: Dough can be made 3 days ahead. Slide onto a rimmed baking sheet and chill while you prep the filling. Roll dough onto your pin, then unfurl it on a sheet of parchment paper. If dough sticks to surface, lift on one side and scatter flour underneath before continuing. Dust surface and rolling pin with flour as needed and rotate dough often to prevent wider cracks. Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface to a 12"–14" round or oval about ⅛" thick (don’t worry about cracks around perimeter). A nurse, either in the hospital or in the clinic, usually accesses the port. When you no longer need to use the port, the dressing and needle are removed, leaving the intact skin. The IV tubing protrudes from the dressing, allowing you to connect it to your medication. The needle is connected to the IV tubing and capped.Ī dressing (type of bandage) is then applied to protect the area to keep out air, dirt, and germs where the IV is inserted. If you prefer, a numbing cream can be used. This fine-gauge needle is inserted through the skin into the rubber round part of the port. When medications or other fluids are needed intravenously, the device is reached using a small, right-angled needle (only this type of needle should be used with the port). You will not need to wear a bandage after the incision is healed unless the port is being used.īecause the device is completely under the skin, it must be accessed to be used. There is usually a small bump, about the size of a nickel. No part of the device lies outside the skin. The port is made of two parts: a medical-grade rubber catheter, which is placed in a large vein in the chest (similar to the location of the PICC catheter), and the "port" which is attached to this catheter.īoth of these parts are "implanted," that is, placed completely beneath the skin. When someone gets a port placed, they will not need IV catheters like peripheral IVs or PICC lines (unless more than one access is required). ![]() It can be used for antibiotics, IV nutrition, and other IV fluids. What Is a Port?Īn implanted port is a device that allows repeated and long-term access to your bloodstream. When it is time to give medicine, the medicine is connected to the PICC line and disconnected again when the medicine is finished. The PICC line can be flushed and capped when not in use. They typically receive one round of antibiotic treatments before the PICC is removed.īecause the tube is so small and flexible, the line can last several weeks, which means fewer needle pokes and less pain. PICCs are intended for temporary use for people who need therapy only once or twice a year. ![]() Your care team will use the PICC line to give IV medications or fluids. This is a type of PICC, but it is a bit shorter and usually goes through a vein in the upper arms. You may hear the term "midline" catheter. They are occasionally placed through a vein on the side of the neck or near the collar bone. PICCs are often placed just above or just below the elbow. This tube is threaded into a large vein above the right side of the heart. It is secured to your skin with an adhesive device, an internal securing device or stitches. What Is a PICC?Ī PICC line is a long, very thin, flexible tube (a catheter) that is usually placed into one of the large veins in the arm (with a short portion of tube and an injection cap showing). A PICC can be left in place for several weeks or even months, which may be necessary for people who are on long-term antibiotics. They are much more practical than regular IV catheters, which are often inserted in the crook of the arm or the back of the hand. Ports are used for longer-term delivery of IV medications, usually over months or often years.Īlthough PICCs and ports have many similarities, if you need IV antibiotics to treat an exacerbation, you will likely get a PICC line placed. PICCs are used for short-term delivery of IV medications, usually over weeks. The choice of which one to use is based on how long the catheter will be left in place. What Kind of Access Devices Are There?Īlthough there are many different types and brands of access devices, the two main categories are PICC lines and ports. For people who need them, however, double ports are available. They can be split into channels (called lumens) to deliver multiple drugs, but for routine CF care, a single lumen is usually enough. ![]() Ports are made of flexible, strong plastic and come in many sizes. They are made of material that doesn't become infected easily and will remain in place if treated with proper care. Implantable devices, such as ports, are designed to be used for years. Venous access devices, such as peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) are designed to be used for days, weeks, or months. ![]() After a few days, regular IVs can become infected, irritate the small veins, or fall out of the vein. Vascular access devices may help people with cystic fibrosis who need intravenous (IV) antibiotic treatments for more than just a few days, such as during an exacerbation. ![]() ![]() ![]() Self-Tagging kiosks¹ allow you to print your own bag tags and tag your own checked bags.
